The CDC estimated 2007 obesity prevalence among adults from self-reported data. No state met the center's Healthy People 2010 objective to lower the percentage of obese adults to 15 percent.
Colorado had the lowest prevalence of obesity at nearly 19 percent, which was more than 1 percent higher than its rate two years earlier, the center said. Obesity rates exceeded 30 percent in Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee. Kentucky, Louisiana, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia were the only states to see obesity rates decline in 2007.
By region, obesity prevalence was higher in the South, 27.3 percent, and Midwest 26.5 percent, and lower in the Northeast, 24.4 percent, and West, 23.1 percent, researchers reported.
