Main syptoms and signs: Pale or sallow complexion, mild edema often worsened by physical overstrain or cold, scanty urine, dizziness, hypodynamia, poor appetite, loose stools, pale or pale and flabby tongue with whitish and thin fur and thready pulse without force.

Therapeutic methods: Strengthening the spleen and tonifying the kidney as well as excreting dampness to relieve edema.

Proscription and drugs: The prescription used is the modified Yiqi Bushen Decoction (Qi-supplementing and Kidney-tonifying Decoction) composed of 3 g of Renshen (Radix Ginseng) (decocted separately), 10 g of Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae), 15 g of Huangqi (Radix Astragali seu Hedysari), 10 g of Fuling (Poria), 15 g of Shanyao (Rhizoma Dioscoreae), 10 g of Oianshi (Semen Euryales), 10 g of Shudihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Praeparata), 10g of Shanzhuyu (Fructus Corni) and 10 g of Tusizi (Semen Cuscutae).

Modification: For the patients with the spleen asthenia, 10 g of Yiyiren (Semen Coicis) and 6 g of Wuweizi (Eructus Schisandrae) are added; for the patients with the kidney asthenia, 10 g of Bajitian (Radix Morindae) and 10 g of Gouqizi (Fructus Lycii) are included; for the patients with lingering proteinuria, 10 g of Jinyingzi (Fructus Rosae Laevigatae), 10 g of Sangpiaoxiao (Ootheca Mantidis) and 10 g of Tusizi (Semen Cuscutae) are added; for the patients with accompanying fever, cough, sore throat, l0 g of Sangye (Folium Mori), 10 g of Juhua (Flos Chrysanthemi), 6 g of Chantui (Periostracum Cicadae), 15 g of Pugongying (Herba Taraxaci), 15 g of Baihuasheshecao (Herba Hedyotis Diffusae) and 10 g of Shiwei (Folium Pyrrosiae) are included; for the patients with sore throat, 10 g of Xuanshen (Radix Serophulariae), 5 g of Jiegeng (Radix Platycodi), 10 g of Niubangzi (Fructus Arctii) and 10 g of Shegan (Rhizoma Belamcandae) are added.
