What is Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a system of healing which has been practised in China and other Eastern countries for thousands of years. Although often described as a means of pain relief, it is in fact used to treat people with a wide range of illnesses. Its focus is on improving the overall well being of the patient, rather than the isolated treatment of specific symptoms. According to traditional Chinese philosophy, our health is dependent on the body's motivating energy - known as Qi - moving in a smooth and balanced way through a series of meridians (channels) beneath the skin.

Qi consists of equal and opposite qualities - Yin and Yang - and when these become unbalanced, illness may result. By inserting fine needles into the channels of energy, an acupuncturist can stimulate the body's own healing response and help restore its natural balance. The flow of Qi can be disturbed by a number of factors. These include emotional states such as anxiety, stress, anger, fear or grief, poor nutrition, weather conditions, hereditary factors, infections, poisons and trauma. The principal aim of acupuncture in treating the whole person is to recover the equilibrium between the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of the individual.

On September 20th, 1995, I had the chance, together with other members of the Kuoni-Group of Switzerland, to visit this Hospital, and to attend your most interesting explanations about Chinese medicine. I simply was impressed what happened with my friend. After 4 days of indisposition, diarrhea, nausea and light fever, you have given her a medicine and only one hour later she was hungry and felt wonderful. She was again interested in all and I heard her laughing. I thank you very much.
In my hands I have the "Kurzinformation" which was given to all of our group. My question is, if you do see any possibility to send me the Tonikum Pills No.s and cream No.18
Can I pay by check? If yes please give me the address of your Bank or any place to sent it. Do you have a price list for all items No.1 to 25?
I am very much looking forward to receiving your information.

How Does Acupuncture Work

Several processes have been proposed to explain acupuncture's effects, primarily those on pain. Acupuncture points are believed to stimulate the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord) to release chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These chemicals either change the experience of pain or release other chemicals, such as hormones, that influence the body's self-regulating systems. The biochemical changes may stimulate the body's natural healing abilities and promote physical and emotional well-being. There are three main mechanisms:

  1. Conduction of electromagnetic signals: Scientists have found evidence that acupuncture points are strategic conductors of electromagnetic signals. Stimulating points along these pathways through acupuncture enables electromagnetic signals to be relayed at a greater rate than under normal conditions. These signals may start the flow of pain-killing biochemicals, such as endorphins, and of immune system cells to specific sites in the body that are injured or vulnerable to disease.
  2. Activation of opioid systems: Research has found that several types of opioids may be released into the central nervous system during acupuncture treatment, thereby reducing pain.
  3. Changes in brain chemistry, sensation, and involuntary body functions: Studies have shown that acupuncture may alter brain chemistry by changing the release of neurotransmitters and neurohormones. Acupuncture also has been documented to affect the parts of the central nervous system related to sensation and involuntary body functions, such as immune reactions and processes whereby a person's blood pressure, blood flow, and body temperature are regulated.

I would like to order Anti-rhinitis Pills for my mother (she has allergy).
Me and my family visited your hospital a few years ago with our travel agency and bought these pills for my husband, who had allergy, too. After two bottles of these pills he has never had any problems. Thank you very much.

How can Acupuncture help?

Many people come to acupuncture for help with specific symptoms or conditions. These might include anxiety states, arthritis, asthma, back pain, circulatory problems, depression, facial paralysis, fibrositis, high blood pressure, indeterminate aches and pains, infertility, menstrual problems, migraines, rheumatism, sciatica, skin conditions and ulcers.

Acupuncture is a safe treatment for all, although for babies and children, pressure rather than needles may be used. Acupuncture has proved to be effective in pregnancy management and for the relief of pain in childbirth. It is also helpful for people trying to overcome addictions such as those related to smoking, alcohol, food or drugs. Some people may have acupuncture as a preventive measure to strengthen their constitution, or because they feel unwell in themselves without being 'ill' in the Western sense. It can also be used alongside conventional medicine in the treatment of both acute and chronic disease. As with any therapy, the response to acupuncture can differ from one person to another.

During a visit to your hospital in April, I purchased 2 months supply of No 9. Diabetes Pills. They are working well for me. Do you have a web site that I can order from. I would like to order one more month (2 containers I believe). Your description of the pill advises 8 pills x 3 times a day. My containers were marked up 4 pills x 3 times a day - and it appears to be working well, so I will stick with that dosage.Looking forward to your reply.

What Does It Feel Like

Most people's experience of needles is of those used in injections and blood tests. Acupuncture needles bear little resemblance to these. They are much finer and are solid rather than hollow. When the needle is inserted, the sensation is often described as a tingling or dull ache. Needles are inserted either for a second or two, or may be left in place for 30 minutes or more, depending on the effect required. During treatment, patients commonly experience a heaviness in the limbs or a pleasant feeling of relaxation. Occasionally people may experience drowsiness after treatment, in which case it is advisable not to drive or do anything that can put you at risk. The benefits of acupuncture frequently include more than just relief from a particular condition. Many people find that it can also lead to increased energy levels, better appetite and sleep as well as an enhanced sense of overall well being

Recently I visited Guilin and your hospital. I got an excellent foot reflex massage. Afterwards a list with Chinese medicines was distributed. I have this list in German. I am interested in ordering the following items: - No. 10 - No. 18 - No. 24
What is the best medicine against sleeping disorder? A lady in our travel group bought something and was highly satisfied with the effects. What is the payment procedure? Credit Card or a different method? I am grateful for information on these questions.

What's the Philosophy of Dao

Dao is often described as "the path" or "the way of life." Just as its counterpart in ancient India, Ayurveda, The laws of the Dao advocate moderation, living in harmony with nature and striving for balance. Ancient Chinese believed that moderation in all areas of life is essential to a long and fruitful life. We are "fueled" by three treasures: Qi or Chi (pronounced chee), Shen, and Jing. Chi is energy or vital substance, Shen is the spirit, and Jing is our essence.

Qi - is both the life force (or vital substance) and the organizing principle flowing through all things and establishing their interconnectedness. Chinese believe that every living thing (both human and non-human) has Qi. In the body, Qi is found in the heart and lungs in circulating blood and oxygen.

Shen - is the treasure that gives brightness to life and is responsible for consciousness and mental abilities. Sometimes it is compared to soul. Within the individual shen is manifested in personality, thought, sensory perception, and the awareness of self.

Jing - is responsible for growth, development and reproduction. Jing represents a person's potential for development. (comparable to western concept of genetical inheritance). Chinese believed that everyone is born with a finite amount of Jing. As we go through life, we lose or consume our Jing little by little. Once we lose Jing, it cannot be replaced. It is gone for ever. We lose Jing if we live a wrong or careless living. But Jing can be preserved if we live in moderation. Acupuncture can reduce the loss of Jing.

According to the philosophy of Dao, the role of the acupuncturist is to restore your health and enable you to live a little closer to the Dao, thus preserving your Jing and living to a ripe old age. A number of factors can contribute to the depletion of Jing. Living a life of excess, drinking too much, excessive emotional reactions, working too hard, inappropriate sexual behavior, etc. all were believed to result in the depletion of Jing. Balance in all things was considered the key to good health and long life.

In order to increase their understanding of the Dao, the Chinese developed two concepts that together form the basis of Chinese thought: yin and yang.

Yin and Yang
The idea of harmony and balance are also the basis of yin and yang. The principle that each person is governed by the opposing, but complementary forces of yin and yang, is central to all Chinese thought. It is believed to affect everything in the universe, including ourselves.

One of the main aims of the acupuncturist is to maintain a balance of yin and yang within the whole person to prevent illness occurring and to restore existing health. Acupuncture is a yang therapy because it moves from the exterior to the interior. Herbal and nutritional therapies, on the other hand, are yin therapies, as they move from the interior throughout the body. Many of the major organs of the body are classified as yin-yang pairs that exchange healthy and unhealthy influences.

Channels or Meridians - The invisible Pathways of Qi
Chinese use the term "jing luo" which means, channels, conduit, meridian etc. These are the invisible channels through which qi circulates throughout the body. The acupuncture points (or holes as the Chinese term xue is more aptly translated means) are the locations where the Qi of the channels rises close to the surface of the body. There are 12 main meridians, six of which are yin and six are yang and numerous minor ones, which form a network of energy channels throughout the body.

Each meridian is related to, and named after, an organ or function, the main ones are: the lungs, kidneys, gallbladder, stomach, spleen, heart, small intestine, large intestine, gall bladder, urinary bladder, three cavites - san jiao (three heater) and pericardium (heart protector/ or circulation sex meridian).

There are also 8 extraordinary channels that are considered to be reservoirs supplying Qi and blood to the twelve regular channels. These are believed to have a strong connection to the kidney.

Along these meridians are more than 400 acupuncture points, classified by WHO. (There may be as many as 2000 points in use for different treatments.) These are listed by name, number and the meridian to which they belong.

When Chi flows freely through the meridians, the body is balanced and healthy, but if the energy becomes blocked, stagnated or weakened, it can result in physical, mental or emotional ill health. An imbalance in a person's body can result from inappropriate emotional responses such as: excess anger, over-excitement, self-pity, deep grief and fear.
Environmental factors such as cold, damp/humidity, wind, dryness, and heat can also cause imbalance so as factors such as wrong diet, too much sex, overwork and too much exercise.

To restore the balance, the acupuncturist stimulates the acupuncture points that will counteract that imbalance. So, if you have stagnant Chi, he will choose specific points to stimulate it. If the Chi is too cold, he will choose points to warm it. If it is too weak, he will strengthen it. If it is blocked, he will unblock it, and so on. In this way, acupuncture can effectively rebalance the energy system and restore health or prevent the development of disease. The points that the practitioner chooses to stimulate may not necessarily be at the site of the symptoms.

How Will It Be Diagnosed

Acupuncture's complex system of diagnostic corollaries takes into account the entire person, not just isolated symptoms. It is practiced based on discerning a pattern of imbalance in the body and treating accordingly. This imbalance can be based on physical and/or emotional difficulties. Based on this theory, acupuncture diagnosis includes patient observation, questioning and palpation.

Your practitioner will ask you a detailed list of questions to determine the true nature of your complaint, including inquiries into your diet, sleeping, digestion, bowel movements, urination, pains, sweats and emotions. Your practitioner will also palpate your pulses on your wrists and abdomen, not just to check its speed, but to judge its condition. Your practitioner look at your tongue color, shape and coating, which by its color and texture can reveal much about your health. This information will then be organized into patterns and a diagnosis and treatment plan will be constructed.

Following my visit to you in Guilin I am having success controlling my Diabetes and would like to place an order for more. Please advise as soon as possible (as I have little left) the cost of No.9 Diabetes Pills. I would like to arrange express delivery if possible.

What to Expect During Your Treatment

Acupuncture needles are very thin and not hollow like injection needles. They all should be pre-sterilized, individually packed, disposable and used once and discarded. Most people receive acupuncture treatment lying, down, although a seated position is sometimes used. Your acupuncturist will guide you and help you relax and receive the most benefit from treatment.

The needles are as thin as human hair and are tapped in through a tiny tube. The needles are left in body for 25 to 30 minutes. Most patients go into a state of deep relaxation and some even fall asleep due to the endorphins which are released during the treatment. In areas where the muscles are especially tight, electrodes may be attached to the needles. The electrical current provides a steady vibration to the tight muscles which feels like a gentle massage.

As a member of a tourist group from Sweden, I visited your hospital in November last year. Based on your recommendation, I bought 2 pots of Antipyretic and Detoxification Pills (No 6 in your list). As these pills have been to my fully satisfaction, I now want to order another 5 pots of the same pills. What's your best price for these 5 pots including freight to Sweden?
How do you want the payment to be carried out?

How Many Treatments Will I Need
Top

Each patient is unique. The number and frequency of treatments will vary from patient to patient. Some symptoms are relieved after the first treatment, while others may take four to ten treatments. While a specific problem is being worked on, you may visit your acupuncturist once or twice a week, and gradually reduce the frequency to once or twice a month. To simply maintain good health, you may limit your treatments to once every season - four times a year.

We recently had the opportunity to visit your facility and receive a reflexology message of the feet. We enjoyed this experience very much and purchased#1 and #18 medicines. We found the staff both professional and helpful. We were brought to your facility by Ms.Long,Guilin from CITS. Kindly provide me with the cost of each of the following, including shipping. Thank you.

Any "Do's And Don't's" On The Day Of A Treatment?

To enhance the value of a treatment, the following guidelines are important:
  • Do not eat an unusually large meal immediately before or after your treatment.
  • Do not over-exercise, engage in sexual activity, or consume alcoholic beverages within 6 hours before or after the treatment.
  • Plan your activities so that after the treatment you can get some rest, or at least not have to be working at top performance. This is especially important for the first few visits.
  • Continue to take any prescription medicines as directed by your regular doctor. Substance abuse (drugs and alcohol) especially in the week prior to treatment, will seriously interfere with the effectiveness of acupuncture reatments.
  • Remember to keep good mental or written notes of what your response is to the treatment. This is important for your doctor to know so that the follow-up treatments can be designed to best help you and your problem.
Thank you for your prompt reply to my Email last Saturday. My daughter has been having some medical problems that I think that your medicine could help. Would you please airmail the following from your list.
1 of No 1 Multifunction Tonic Pills. 1 of No 2 Pills to Invigorate Yang.  1 of No 16 Anti-Asthma Pills.
